Albert Louis Ammen and Max Blouse launched Philtranco in 1914 as the AL Ammen Transportation Company (ALATCO), which ran passenger buses between Iriga and Naga. The Tuason family took possession in 1958, followed by the Mantrade Group soon before Martial Law was declared in 1971. Pantranco South Express, Inc. was the company’s name at the time.
Creditors took over and restructured the corporation in 1974, enabling for a financial turnaround despite the country’s repeated financial losses in the 1980s. By 1979, the firm had expanded its service to the eastern Visayas region, and three years later it began ferry operations over the San Bernardino Strait.
